Ken Lutes...

I grew up in Denver, Colorado, and graduated from West High School.

Music has always had a prominent presence in my life. My older brother and sister exposed me to the R&B of the Fifties, my parents listened to Big Band swing. I began composing songs and playing guitar at 14 and 16, respectively, being influenced by Buddy Holly, Roy Orbison, The Beach Boys, and The Beatles.

My quest for spiritual enlightenment has taken me through many philosophical centers, from the metaphysical writings of Edgar Cayce to Annie Besant and Rudolph Steiner [theosophy, anthroposophy]; from Alfred North Whitehead's process philosophy to Quakerism. Central to my concept of Grace is the idea that the world is in a faithful state of 'becoming,' ever-renewing.

A State of Grace was my first attempt at writing a book. A State of Grace captures some of who I was in 2000. I don't recommend you rush right out and buy it--but I won't discourage you, either. Since writing it, I've learned that the path to self-enlightenment is less metaphysical that emotional. It's hard work to dig through the foggy layers of the honest "me." And it doesn't stop with writing a book. I discovered that was only the beginning, and I'm in the constant process of unearthing myself.

Presently, I'm concentrating on a series of creative non-fiction short stories based on childhood events. Dredging for those memories is like plunging your hand into a jar of molasses: you know you'll get it out okay, but it's gonna be real sticky.

I perform in an acoustic duo, Paris Swing Set, with my wife, Laurie. We play predominantly in the "gypsy jazz," style of Django Reinhardt-Stephane Grappelli (to learn about our first duo, click Laurie & Ken). I have recorded a CD of original songs, "Prom Night" and Laurie & I have also produced a CD of original and cover tunes, Winter Sun.

I have three terrific kids--Drew, Kira, and Belinda--and I live in northwest Denver.
