Read these Questions & Answers to understand more about Audio Restoration.
There
are two basic ways to own preservation copies
of those precious musical treasures as CD's.
BUY IT EXTANT
The first thing to do is to determine whether the music you want is already available on CD.
You say you have a lot of LP's from the '70's or beyond. Well, many of those classics have already been "CD-ized" by their original rights owners, licensees, or publishing houses. Of course, some recordings will not be available--for example, that old high school concert performance, recorded memories of a family reunion, radio broadcasts, or a children's performance (or that cassette tape you might have made at fiddle camp).
A quick artist or title search on the internet on sites such as Yahoo, Amazon.com, or Barnes and Noble's online site, will probably yield a definitive answer (I can check for you, if you'd like). To my surprise and delight, I have found several recordings on CD that I really didn't believe would already exist. If the LP is available on CD, this is the least expensive to acquire it. But if the search is negative, then you'll want to consider...
CONVERSION
Everyone's needs are different. The cost varies based on the conversion type, that is, whether one wants simply to covert recordings from their sources (LP's, 45's, 78's, or cassette tapes), or restore the sound quality by reducing--or eliminating, in many cases--annoying pops, clicks, and surface noises.
Personally, I have converted several LP's that I thought were in an acceptable enough condition so as to require little, if any, filtering. Besides, I sometimes revel in the feeling that I'm listening to "my old records." It's just great knowing I'm hearing them on CD,s and that the music isn't being degraded with every play.
Cassette tapes will get brittle over time, increasing the risk that the tape will break. As with LP's or 45's, taped music can be copied to CD's.
Here's a list of projects.
The quality of materials and manufacturing play huge roles in the ability to restore LP's, 45's, and 78's. And of course, these sources have imperfections caused by wear-and-tear or even by poor factory imprinting processes. They all have inherent surface noise. Basic Sound Restoration services provide refined "cleaning" (filtering) processes to overcome most of these imperfections.
The Basic Sound Restoration service includes de-clicking and de-noising processes. What does that mean? Sophisticated software, designed specifically for audio restoration, can detect the difference between pops (or clicks) and music and can remove them without disrupting the musical integrity.
All recordings will benefit from from this service. Recordings in very good to excellent condition can often be restored to near CD quality, with virtually all the annoying pops and clicks eliminated. Unfortunately not all recordings can be converted to perfection. The condition of the source (LP, 45, 78, tape) will determine the success of restoration (check out the examples); for instance, inherent distortion cannot be eliminated.
TURN-AROUND TIME
Normally, conversion of a single album takes 1-2 weeks, not counting shipping time.
